In Nepal, Dashain is celebrated for 15 days. The first 9 days are also called as Navratri. During Navratri, 9 different incarnations of Durga Bhawani is prayed. Day 1: Shilaputri, Day 2: Bhramacharini, Day 3: Chandraghanta, Day 4: Kushmandu, Day 5: Skandmata, Day 6: Katyayani, Day 7: Kaalratri, Day 8: Mahagauri, Day 9: Siddhidaatri. In this article, we will describe the 5th ritual performed. The fifth day of Dashain is also known as the Panchami, and this year, it falls on the 5th of Karthik Month as per Nepali Calendar.
5th Day of Dashain
Each day of Navratri is dedicated to one of 9 different manifestations of Goddess Dura, and Day 5 of the Dashain is wholly devoted to Goddess Skandmata. On this day, the fifth manifestation of Durga Bhawani, Goddess Skandmata, is worshipped auspiciously. Regarded as the goddess of warmth and loge, Goddess Skandmata provides her devotees with lifelong happiness.
Goddess Skandmata is one of the incarnations of goddess Durga, also known as God Kartikeya’s mother. When Parvati gave birth to God Kartikeya (also called Lord Skanda), Parvati started to be known as Goddess Skandamata. Goddess Skandamata is portrayed as riding a lion while carrying baby Kartikeya in her lap. She has 4 hands and sits on the flower.

Mantra to be recited

This powerful mantra is recited for Goddess Skandamata on the day 5 of Dashain. It is believed that the blessings of Goddess Skandamata bring happiness, prosperity, and peace in the family. Devotees seek her blessings for life long joy and harmony within the family.
In Nepal, the Dashain festival officially starts from the Ghatasthapana when the Ghata / Kalash is established to be worshipped. Along with that, on this day, jamara (Holy Grass) is planted. Jamra is nothing but the sprouted grass of barley or corn. On the tenth day of Dashain, this grass is given as Prasad to the devotees. From the first day, the worshipping of the Goddess Durga starts.
Reciting Chandi Mantra is also one of the most important aspects of the Dashain festival. Each day, Chandi Mantra is recited to worship for saluting the power of Goddess Durga. As per the rituals, the Chandi mantra is recited on each day of Navratri twice; in the morning and the evening, and as per rituals, the only male member of the family is allowed to recite this mantra. Small kids and women are not allowed to recite this mantra.
Following the first day that is Ghatasthapana, the Dashain festival starts, and with this, the celebration of fun, love, and joy starts. Along with the ritual parts, Dashain is also known for other activities like flying kits, eating mutton, making rotis, playing kits, shipping, decorating the house, and many more.
